The Washington Humane Society reports "high temperatures cause first fatality of 2005" when a mixed boxer left in a parked car, in the parking lot of the East Potomac Golf Course, died from heat trauma this week [The Washington Humane Society]. Think twice before leaving your pet in a vehicle on warm day. Within minutes, on a 78° day, temperatures within a parked vehicle can reach 90° in a shady area and 160° in a sunny area . Your pet can suffer heatstroke, which can result in brain damage or death, within 15 minutes [PETA]. Symptoms of heatsroke include: restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue, rapid heartbeat, fever, vomiting, or lack of coordination. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, get her or him into the shade immediately and call your veterinarian. Lower the animals body temperature gradually by providing water to drink, applying a cold towel or ice pack to the head, neck, and chest, or immersing the dog in lukewarm (not cold) water. For more tips on keeping dogs cool in hot weather, please see Cool Ideas for Hot Dogs [PETA].

"...large, happy dogs like Golden Retrievers and Chocolate Labs." A delightful analysis of why everything in life would be better if we all lived like Big Dogs...definitely worth reading!!!
