Furry Friends who've come through our doors

Anne

Admiral (aka Shelly) came to us from a rural shelter in WV. To say he was an escape artist is an understatement. Admiral was adopted and was sooooo loved by his new "Mom and Dad". Sadly, Admiral's new "good life" was short lived as it was discovered he had brain cancer which took him from us all.

Dan
Andi came to us from a shelter in Virginia where she was consistently turned down by other rescues because she is a "doodle". It wasn't very long after Andi went to her foster home that we discovered she was pregnant - very pregnant. Thank you, Liz Brannan for caring for Andi - and her family so lovingly until they all found homes.

Carmie
Amos Amos came to us from a WV shelter. Black dogs are usually the last ones to be adopted, and Amos had languished in shelter care for a long time. Upon intake, we discovered that poor Amos was also heartworm positive, and had a damaged hip (probably the result of being hit by a car). Amos was successfully treated for heartworm disease, and thanks to the help of Lab Rescue, is now living happily in his new adoptive home.

Buddy G
Buddy and Chloe were lifelong companions and buddies who came to us together. We were so happy when we were able to find them a new home - together. Sadly, Buddy developed cancer very soon after being adopted and passed away. We so wish he had been granted more time to spend in his wonderful new home.

Chloe G

Martie
Amy came to us with another dog from the same family after her owner could no longer care for her. Amy is diabetic - and blind. Sweet beyond belief, we are grateful to Lab Rescue for accepting her into their program as they had a wonderful foster home ready and waiting for her.

Reecie

George - Before
George had been running loose and when he approached a stranger, the man freaked out and beat poor George - almost to death - with a piece of lumber. The vet said if George was any other breed, he would have died. George was adopted, but had to be returned when his daytime barking disturbed the neighbors. George then found another home (thanks to his original adopters) where he has flourished.

George - After

Poor Casey came to us in horrible condition. People who saw him would ask "what breed is he?" It took a long time - and his adoptive Dad a long time - but we are happy to say that Casey has bloomed in his new home - along with his 5 canine stepbrothers (several of which are special needs).

Bonnie
What kind of heartless person would dump their 15 -18 year old dog at the shelter to die? Well - that's what Ben's owner did. The shelter is a gassing facility and we just couldn't let this old boy's life end that way. Ben lived out his days here with us. He did very well despite being almost blind for quite a while before his health took an irreversible turn for the worse - and he left us peacefully one night - while he was sleeping.
Poor old Batman and Pete's owners moved away and left them in a pen behind the house. When we were called by the realtor who was hired to list the property, we were appalled by the conditions these two poor animals were left in. A 5 gallon bucket of sludge was in their pen - one of the most disgusting excuses for a water supply we have ever witnessed. Batman was emaciated, as was Pete whose feces were almost pure dirt for days as he had been eating dirt to try to stave off hunger. There was evidence food, at one time, was dumped over the fence and onto the ground - but none available when we arrived - and from the state of the dogs - was not available for some time. Despite the horrible neglect and near starvation, both dogs had great personalities - and found homes.

Ralph
Unadopted, Baron lived out his life with us. He was a wonderful dog with exceptionally poor hip conformation so his activities were monitored closely. He passed away of old age related issues in 2012.

Belle
Bertie - old and sick ended up in a high kill shelter. Bertie was later adopted by a wonderful man who only wishes he was given more time with her.

Dudley
Bettie was almost feral when the dog wardens were notified of her plight. One eye was blinded, she walked with a distinctive limp, and was emaciated. Well - look at her now ~ She's a beauty!

Buddy M
Bernie came to us with a terrible case of doggie flu. Bernie finally got well, and was adopted to people I had not approved of - but others on the "Board" thought they would provide a good home. These people raved about what a wonderful dog Bernie was for weeks, then when money got tight for them, demanded a refund because he was "aggressive". When AHGRRS wouldn't immediately comply with this demand (our contract, which they signed and initialled specifically states "no refunds" and any unwanted dog must be returned to AHGRRS) - they called the police - who in spite of the dog being housed in AHGRRS kennels by then, with paperwork detailing his return that day, the officer overstepped his authority and returned the dog to his adopters. The very day he was returned to the adopters, Bernie disappeared- never to be seen again - but sadly, the story didn't end there.

Charlie
Taffy is all dressed up and ready to go.

Cooper 2
Big Buddy definitely lived up to his name

Zeus

Brodie was sent to us by a rescuer in the south. He was judged to be terminally ill with ehrlichia among other illnesses. We were told our Brodie would probably only be with us about 3 months before he would cross the Bridge. Well - this old boy sure fooled everyone. Brodie lived 3 more YEARS - and was probably 17 years old when he passed away. He was a very sweet old gentleman - and he is still missed.

Lewis

Bubba and Toby are littermates who became inconvenient when their owners started building a new home. We never had any sweeter dogs here - and we're so happy to report that they found a wonderful home together.

Carlie
Bob and Sugar Bob came from a shelter in WV - and his foster Mom absolutely fell in love with this gentle, easy going dog. Sugar, who came from another WV shelter, was Bob's best friend until she passed away from Kidney failure.

Dozer
It almost broke Bryn and Dozer's owners' hearts when they had to send them to rescue because of circumstances far beyond their control. We had a large tumor removed from Dozer's chest before sending them both off to a wonderful new home - together.

Bryn

Raynee
Buddy came to us from a shelter in KY after the local rescue declined accepting him into their rescue because he picked a fight with another shelter resident. He was also heartworm positive. Buddy was neutered, treated for heartworm, and lived for quite a while here at the Sanctuary before he was adopted. Buddy learned "social skills" while here - and now happily lives with his own family.

Grif

Buddy
Buddy and Magic were 7 month old littermates whose owner could not keep inside his fence - and who were facing sure death - via being hit by car if they weren't relocated. The boys were vetted and we are happy to report that both found wonderful new homes.

Magic

Bob H

Buffy may have had a rough start to her life - but this Diva dog has it made now. Her new Mom even buys her the latest fashions to celebrate the holidays!

Simba C

Capone - who was so sweet - but so sick at the shelter the volunteers called for help. He was in a gassing facility - a horrible way to die. CJ picked Capone up and took him to our vet for evaluation and treatment. Sadly, there was nothing left to do but send him on his way across the Bridge - which we did - humanely, without pain or suffering. He is buried in our volunteer's yard.

Cody M

Charlene Red Dog lived under her owner's porch - winter and summer - and when her owner became too ill to care for her, Charlene came to us. Charlene was very sick with doggy flu - for weeks. It seemed to take forever to get this poor dog well enough to be groomed and vetted (she was too sick for vaccines or spay). But, as you can see - she cleaned up real nice (think that's a country song), and is enjoying her new life with her new Mom.
Cami - will always hold a very special place in our hearts.
